Mabon, the Pisces New Moon & the Astrological New Year

A Threshold Moment For The Soul (From Aotearoa)
There are moments in the year where everything seems to pause…And this is one of them.Across March 19th - 23rd here in Aotearoa (NZDT), we move through one of the most energetically significant windows of the year. The Autumn Equinox, a Pisces New Moon, the Astrological New Year, and Mercury turning direct — all arriving within hours of each other.
Something Has Been Shifting
There’s something in the air right now.
You might not be able to explain it… but you can feel it.
A soft slowing.
A quiet heaviness.
A sense that something is ending, even if you can’t quite name what.
For me, it started in the most ordinary way.
Trucks driving past, loaded up with freshly harvested maize silage.
A tangible reminder from the land itself — we are in harvest season now.
And that moment pulled me inward… into reflection, into curiosity, into remembering.
Reclaiming the Seasons We Actually Live In
For a long time, I felt a kind of imposter syndrome when it came to pagan traditions.
Like I wasn’t “allowed” to resonate with them.
But when I really sat with that feeling, something clicked.
My ancestry — England, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, Scandinavia — lands where these seasonal rhythms were once honoured deeply.
Of course it resonates.
Of course it lives in me.
But here in Aotearoa, we’ve inherited a digital world that is overwhelmingly Northern Hemisphere.
So while they’re celebrating spring, we are quietly stepping into Autumn.
And when I flipped the Wheel of the Year to match our seasons…
Everything made sense.
Mabon — A Moment of Perfect Balance
Mabon marks the Autumn Equinox (exact on March 20th at 10:46pm NZDT) — one of the only two points in the year were day and night are in perfect balance.
Light and dark, equal.
It’s a threshold.
A pause between what has been… and what is about to begin.
Interestingly, the name Mabon itself is relatively modern — coined in the 1970’s.
But the honouring of this moment?
Ancient.
Felt across cultures, across land, across time.
This Week Isn’t Ordinary (And Here’s Why)
This isn’t just a general ‘energetic week.’
It’s incredibly precise.
Here in Aotearoa (NZDT), everything converges within roughly 24 hours —
- The Pisces New Moon peaks March 19th at 10:23pm
- Mercury stations direct on March 20th around 6:00pm
- And just a few hours later, at 10:46pm on March 20th, the Sun moves into Aries — marking both the Autumn Equinox and the Astrological New Year.
This is not spread out energy.
This is layered.
Compressed.
Intensified.
A closing… followed almost immediately by a beginning.
It’s almost as if the sky gives us no space to stay where we’ve been.
A Rare Alignment — Echoes of Past Turning Points
When you zoom out, this isn’t just a 'busy week’ astrologically.
It’s a convergence.
A moment where cycles close and reopen simultaneously.
And historically, when we see similar energetic signatures — particularly around the end and beginning of zodiac cycles, with strong Pisces/Neptune influence — we often see collective shifts.
Moments where —
- old systems begin to dissolve
- people start questioning what they once accepted
- new ways of thinking begin to emerge
Events like the American and French Revolutions weren’t just political.
They were consciousness shifts.
Now, this doesn’t mean we’re repeating history.
But it does suggest something important — when illusion clears, change becomes inevitable.
The Pisces New Moon — The Clearing
The Pisces New Moon, exact on March 19th at 10:23pm NZDT, arrives just the night before Equinox.
Pisces is the final sign of the zodiac,
It carries the energy of endings, surrender, and emotional release.
This is where we let go.
Where we process,
Where we soften.
You might be feeling —
- a little more emotional
- more tired than usual
- drawn inward
- uncertain… but aware something is shifting
This isn’t regression,
This is clearing space.
The Astrological New Year — The Spark
Just over 24 hours later, at 10:46pm on March 20th NZDT, the Sun moves into Aries.
This marks the Astrological New Year.
The beginning of a new zodiac cycle.
A natural ignition point.
A quiet but undeniable shift into forward motion.
But notice…
We don’t rush into it.
We move through Pisces first.
We release… before we begin

Mercury Direct — Clarity Returns
Earlier that same day, on March 20th around 6:00pm NZDT, Mercury stations direct.
After a period of reflection, confusion, or miscommunication, things begin to move forward again.
Clarity starts to return.
Decisions feel easier.
And it happens just hours before the new cycle begins.
Almost as if we are being gently realigned… before we step forward.
The Equinox — Returning to Balance
The Equinox invites us back into balance.
Not just externally, internally.
Where have you been overextending?
Where are you being asked to soften?
Where can you come back into alignment?
This is a recalibration point.
A moment to realign before the next chapter unfolds.
The Energy Harvest
Mabon is a harvest festival.
But not just of crops.
Of life.
This is a moment to reflect on what you’ve grown —
- your resilience
- your lessons
- your quiet progress
Even the things no one else saw.
This is your reminder — you have more to celebrate than you think.
How This May Be Affecting You
Fire signs may feel restless… ready to move, but being asked to pause.
Earth signs may feel reflective… reassessing what’s stable and sustainable.
Air signs may feel mentally foggy… clarity just out of reach, but coming.
Water signs may feel everything more deeply… but also more intuitively than ever.
Wherever you sit, this energy is asking the same thing — slow down, clear space, and prepare.
How I’m Honouring The Moment
For me, this isn’t about elaborate rituals.
It’s about intention.
Simplicity.
Presence.
Journaling what I’m grateful for.
Releasing what no longer feels aligned.
Spending time in nature.
Cooking from what I’ve grown.
Sitting with my girls and sharing what we’re proud of.
Small moments.
But meaningful ones.

An Eerie Synchronicity
And then… there’s this.
The equinox falls on March 20th.
In Numerology, 20 reduces to 2.
And 2 is the number of —
-
balance
-
duality
-
reflection
The equinox itself is a moment of perfect balance between light and dark.
At the same time, we’re moving from Pisces (the end) into Aries (the beginning).
A duality.
An in-between.
A threshold.
And layered into that… a New Moon.
A point zero.
A reset.
So within this magical window of March 19th-20th we have —
- a beginning (New Moon)
- a balance point (Equinox / 2 energy)
- a new cycle (Astrological New Year)
All converging within hours of each other.
Not randomly.
But rhythmically.
My Final Reflection
There are many ‘new years’ we move through.
January.
Lunar cycles.
Financial years.
But this one…
It’s felt,
A natural turning of the wheel.
A moment where something ends…
and something else quietly begins.
So if you’ve been feeling different lately — more emotional, more reflective, more aware.
You’re not imagining it.
You’re standing at a threshold.
If You’re Feeling Called for Deeper Guidance
If this energy has been bringing things up for you — questions, emotions, uncertainty — you don’t have to move through it alone.
I’m currently offering intuitive tarot and oracle readings, where we can gently explore things like —
- what you’re being asked to release
- what’s beginning to unfold
- where your energy is shifting next
You can explore readings here.
Take a deep breath.
Honour your harvest.
Release what's ready to fall away.
And trust...
That what's coming next is already beginning to take shape.
Happy Mabon, from Aotearoa.
Sending you so much love & light,
Sarah xx
